Fayetteville State Women to Face Claflin in CIAA Quarterfinals

Charlotte, N.C. – The CIAA Queens of the South, Fayetteville State University, will take on the advancing Claflin University in the 2018-19 CIAA Women's Basketball Tournament Quarterfinals at the Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, N.C. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:20 pm on Wednesday (February 27) afternoon following the Men's 12:10 Quarterfinal round against Bowie State.
 
The Panthers (15-13 overall) defeated Chowan 69-65 Tuesday morning in the first round of the tournament.
 
Fayetteville State had a BYE round in the Tournament after finishing the regular season with an 11-1 Southern Division record.
 
All-CIAA forward Yakima Clifton (Durham, N.C.) will lead the Broncos with her team-high 7.1 rebounds per game (5.8 defensive boards) and 1.8 blocks. Clifton averages 9.2 points in 23 games played.
 
Katisha Hyman (Chocowinity, N.C.) is the Broncos leading scorer with a 12.9 average with Shantel Bennett (Sanford, N.C.) right behind her with 11.1. Bennett has the third best shooting percentage (.530) with the most field goals made with 105 on 198 attempts.
 
The Broncos have been playing team ball through its 11-game win streak and has a 6.8 scoring margin over its opponents with 64 points per game. Fayetteville State has a focus to shoot high percentage shots with 3.7 three-point shots made per game. FSU is also making 67.8 percent of its free throws. The team is sharing the ball with 13 assists a game and they take advantage of its opponent's 19.8 turnovers per game.
 
The will be the first time the two Southern Division teams will meet in the CIAA Tournament, as Claflin is a newly added member.
 
Fayetteville State defeated the Panthers twice in the regular season by the scores of 73-56 and 69-55.
 
CIAA Defensive Player of the Year Ashley Fields leads the Panthers with 16 points per game and 8.1 rebounds. She has 2.7 steals, 18 blocks and 150 defensive rebounds. Dashia Jackson is averaging 13.1 points and Deja Dickens has 10.9.
