FSU Broncos to Meet Bowie State in the CIAA Men’s Bracket

Charlotte, N.C. – The 2018-19 CIAA Men's Basketball Tournament bracket is set and Fayetteville State, the South's No. 6 seed, will face the North's No. 3 Bowie State in the Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, N.C. for the eighth time in tournament history. Tip-off is slated for 12:10 in the afternoon on Wednesday, February 27th.

The Broncos finished the season with a 5-13 conference record while Bowie State is on a two-game losing streak with a 12-5 CIAA standing.

Fayetteville State will have a better showing against Bowie State with its entire squad available for action.

Look for JaQuel Richmond (Greensboro, N.C.) to be the floor general for Broncos. He leads the team in scoring with 16.7 points per game with nine games played. The transfer from UNC-Wilmington was cleared for action during the holiday break and has scored 20+ points in three games and 19 in one. He has scored double-digit points in every game played.

Joshua Bryant (Fayetteville, N.C.) will be expected to score a lot of points and utilize his speed to break the Bulldogs' press defense. Bryant averages 11.3 points in 16 games played.  Although he doesn't shoot a lot of three's, Bryant has made 50% of them with 7-of-14. Despite playing at the guard position, Joshua leads the team with 5.8 rebounds per game and 4.5 defensive boards.

Denzell Hosch (Shelby, N.C.) has played in all 25 games and has an 11.3 scoring average. He tied his school record of 10 made three-points in a game and scored a career high 45 points.

Mark Burton (Tokyo, Japan) has the second most points scored with 206 (8.6 per game).

When the two programs last faced off on January 14th, Fayetteville State could not get in rhythm after a 10-3 start at tip and ending in a 68-52 defeat. The Broncos also lost the battle on the boards by 15 (39-24).

Markeise Crutchfield (Greensboro, N.C.) led the team with 17 points with Will Brown (Gresham, S.C.) chipping in 10. With team leader JaQuel Richmond sitting the bench from an ankle sprain, there was not a lot of production from the guards. Outside shooters Denzell Hosch had nine points and Mark Burton hit five. Joshua Bryant, who had point guard responsibilities, had only hit two points. Only seven Broncos scored.

Rinardo Perry hit a game-high 22 points for Bowie State. Saiquan Jamison tallied a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Yohance Fleming scored 14 and Cameron Hayes accounted for 10.

The last time the Broncos took the court against Bowie State in the CIAA Tournament was the 2016-17 Championship game in the Spectrum Arena. In Head Coach Ken Spencer's first year at the helm, Fayetteville State battled through the rounds with victories over St. Augustine's (86-80) in the first round, Shaw (56-49) in the quarter-finals, and Virginia State (70-61) in the semi-finals.

That year Bowie State won the conference title 62-54 over the exhausted Broncos. The first time FSU played BSU in the Tournament was in 1993-94 when Ricky Duckett's squad defeated the Bulldogs 67-66 in the first round.

FSU holds a 4-3 advantage over Bowie State in the CIAA Tournament.
