Game Recap: Softball |

Vincent Homers Twice in FSU’s 2-12 and 10-11 loss to Benedict

Columbia, S.C. – Fayetteville State softball (0-8 overall) traveled to Columbia, S.C. to face Benedict College in a non-conference doubleheader action. The Tigers (4-4 overall) defeated the Broncos 2-12 in the first game but needed two runs to overcome FSU 11-10 in an extra inning.

Madison Mendoza (Apple Valley, Calif.) hit her second homerun of the season in the Broncos (0-8 overall) 2-12 loss. She tacked on another homer in the first inning of the second game for a two-run RBI.

Grace Vincent (Durham, N.C.) followed the feat of a homer to give Fayetteville State a 4-0 lead after the Broncos first at-bat. When Vincent stepped to plate in the second inning, she knocked another homer over left center for a three-run RBI and a 7-0 lead for the Broncos.

Benedict battled back though the next three innings to tie the game at 8-8 after five innings.

Destiny Poole (Seneca, S.C.) laid up a sacrifice fly to give FSU a 9-8 advantage after the top of the seventh inning.

The Tigers responded in desperation with a single up the third base line to send the game into an extra inning.

In the top of the eighth inning, Mendoza hit a long one up and into centerfield. The sacrifice fly allowed FSU a 10-9 lead before closing out the half.

Once again, the Tigers matched the score with an RBI double and won the game on a fielder's choice.

Fayetteville State will face the Tigers again, this time at Fayetteville's Lamon Street Park, on March 7th in a 2 and 4 p.m. doubleheader.

Ashlyn Zook lost her 5th game in the circle after the first game and Mendoza is 0-3 after the second.
