Fayetteville State Falls 8-2 and 8-0 to Belmont Abbey in Doubleheader

Belmont, N.C. – The Fayetteville State softball team travel to Belmont, N.C. and suffered an 8-2 and 8-0 loss to Belmont Abbey in an early season doubleheader.
 
The Broncos (0-4 overall) were led by Cheyene Ingram (Sanford, N.C.) and Nicole Brown (Independence, Ky.) who finished with three hits each in both games combined. Madison Mendoza (0-1 overall) and Ashelyn Zook (0-3 overall) suffered the losses in the pitcher's circle.
 
The Crusaders (6-2 overall) took an early lead in the first of the twin-bill with five runs in first inning. Payton Whitley homered to left center for a three run RBI for the 5-0 lead. In the bottom of the third, Melissa Neyhouse doubled to right center which led to a two-run RBI and an 8-0 lead.
 
In the top of the fifth inning, Cheyene Ingram singled down the left-field line for her first hit of the game. Three batters later, Neah Stevens (Raleigh, N.C.) singled up the middle to bring Ingram home for the Broncos first score. Mallory Carpenter hit into a double play situation when belted the ball into the centerfield, but before the final play of the outing would come to a close, Mikayla Jackson (who reached on a hit by pitch) crossed home plate for a two-run inning.
 
Fayetteville State collected a total of four hits with two runs but also committed two errors. Maddison Mendoza had her first loss in the circle after giving up 8 runs on 10 hits. In six innings pitched, she faced 33 batters, walked three and struck out two.
 
In the second game, Belmont Abbey scored two runs in the second inning and three in the third for a 5-0 lead. The Crusaders tacked on three more in the bottom of the 5th to end the game early.
 
Ashlyn Zook falls to 0-3 in the circle after the Crusaders had nine hits in the game. She faced 26 batters in 4.1 innings pitched.
 
Nikki Brown had a hit in both of her plate appearances. Fayetteville State finished with five hits total for the game but made three errors in the field.
 
The Broncos will take on Wingate University in a doubleheader on Saturday, February 16 in Wingate, N.C. The twin bill will start at 1 p.m.
