Story Links

Fayetteville, NC – Fayetteville State overcame a shockingly 31-26 halftime deficit to remain unbeaten on the season with a 72-68 victory over Methodist University (3-3 overall) in the Monarchs' Riddle Center.

Junior Mark Burton (Tokyo, Japan) led all scorers with 26 points, thanks to 6-of-12 shots from beyond the three-point arc. Fellow junior Jalen Seegars (Greensboro, NC) followed with 14 point while Raymon Pratt (Greensboro, NC) pulled down ten rebounds.

It is not often that the two institutions, separated a few miles apart, tangle on the basketball court but tonight a battle it was. Today was the second time this season that the Broncos trailed at the half. Elizabeth City State led by one (34-33) on November 26th before FSU walked away with the 65-59 victory.

Fayetteville State watched an early first half 18-8 lead drop to the five-point halftime deficit.

Following intermission, the Broncos captured a 44-40 lead after an 18-9 run. The Monarchs cut the lead to one, but an 11-3 run led by Burton and a three-ball by Jalen Spicer (Greensboro, NC) gave FSU another ten-point advantage (65-55) with 2:59 left in the game.

Dante Burden led Methodist with 18 points with Kaymon Mitchell netting 17 points. Garren Dearman had a double-double of 13 points and ten rebounds.

Fayetteville State will host Livingstone (7-2 overall) on Monday at 7:30 pm in Capel Arena. The Blue Bears are on a four-game win streak with a 128-122 double-overtime victory over the defending CIAA Champions Virginia State University.
