Bowie, MD – Fayetteville State (11-2 overall, 4-2 CIAA) suffered a 71-64 loss to Bowie State (8-6, 1-2) in the A.C. Jordan Arena in Bowie Maryland as
Luke D'Alessio returned to the court where he coached on for a decade.
Jalen Seegars (Greensboro, NC) scored a game-high 18 points with six rebounds and three blocks. Darion Dixon, a native of Bowie, followed with 15 points and five boards. Fellow big man
Will Brown (Gresham, SC) had 10 points with six rebounds and four blocks.
An early 11-2 FSU first half run gave the Broncos a 16-9 lead at the 11:11 mark but the consequent 25-19 advantage dissipated with a Bulldog 16-0 run in the final six minutes and 21 seconds of the half.
Fayetteville State continue to struggle following the halftime break as BSU enjoyed a 9-2 run in the opening 2:46 of the second half.
Seegars sparked a Bronco 13-2 run with back-to-back jumpers to bring the score to 48-42. As Bowie State could only find success from the charity stripe making 6-of-6, the Broncos had another 11-3 spurt to trail 58-60 with 4:05 left in the game.
Up by four (63-59), Cameron Hayes nailed a three with 1:54 left to force Fayetteville State into a timeout with a seven-point deficit (66-59).
Dixon would close the gap by down to three (67-64), with 26 seconds left, after two buckets under the basket and a free throw.
Forced to foul, Bowie State would close the game out with a victory.
Hayes led the Bulldogs with 15 points while David Belle had 13 and Yohance Fleming finished with 11 points.
Fayetteville State shot slightly better than BSU making 42.3% (22-52) of its shots but the Broncos struggled beyond the arc with 6-of-24 shooting. FSU also had a challenge at the free throw line with 14-of-24 made (58.3%). BSU shot 37.5% (21-56) in field goals and enjoyed a 22-of-26 appearance at the charity stripe.
