Fayetteville, NC – Fayetteville State (0-5 overall) held the No. 5 Virginia Union (4-1 overall) in check until the final 56 seconds of the game when the Panthers captured a 65-60 victory. FSU led 29-24 at the half but trailed 48-42 after three quarters.
The Broncos closed within two points (62-60) after a layup by
London Thompson with 56 seconds on the clock. After Shameka NcNeill fouled out the game, the Broncos missed an opportunity to tie it with 44 seconds left and again at 16 seconds.
Virginia Union tacked on three more points with a basket on a foul and a free throw with seven seconds left in regulation.
Katisha Hyman (Chocowinity, NC) led the effort with a 23-point performance with
Alyssa Thompson (Charlotte, NC) chipping in 11 and
London Thompson (Lumberton, NC) tossing in ten points.
Fayetteville State led by as many as 11 points (19-8) in the first quarter and had its last lead of 29-27 in the third quarter (8:21). FSU took advantage of 24 Panther-turnovers with 22 points off them but struggled on the boards losing the battle 40 to 24 and second-chance points, 18-to-7.
Shareka McNeill was held to 27 points for the game. Jasmine Carter contribute 17 points and ten rebounds as well as Dy'Manee Royal tipping in 14 points and 12 boards.
Fayetteville State will travel to Elizbeth City State on Tuesday for its first conference game of the season.
