Fayetteville, NC – It became a close battle in the end, but Fayetteville State (5-0 overall) prevailed 67-64 over Virginia Union (2-4 overall) in Capel Arena for its fifth consecutive win. The Broncos never trailed in game and led by as much as 20 (31-11) at the 5:59 mark of the first half and held a 35-24 halftime lead.
Jalen Seegars led the game with 16 points with three other Broncos finishing in double digits.
Denzell Hosch had one of his better games of the season with a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc and five of seven field goals.
Darian Dixon and
Raymon Pratt banged in the paint for 11 points each.
The tradition of Virginia Union at winning the battle on the boards (30 to 27) and having an advantage of scoring 18 points off turnovers to the Broncos 14 points helped the Panthers close the game down to a tied 44-44 game with 10:33 left in the game.
Terrell Leach led VUU with 14 points with Jordan Peebles grabbing nine rebounds and 12 points. Tyriek Railey added ten points in the effort.
After
Denzell Hosch broke the tie with a three-ball, the Broncos increased its lead to as much as nine points until 2:48 left in the game. An 8-1 run by Virginia Union set the game at 61-60 with a little over a minute left in the game.
A three-pointer by Hosch with 1:02 left would be the last field goal for the Broncos, but three of four free throws would secure the victory.
Terrell Leach hit a three before the buzzer for the 67-64 score.
Fayetteville State will open conference play on Monday, November 25th at Elizabeth City State.
