Fayetteville, NC – The CIAA Southern Division Champions, Fayetteville State, will pack its bags for Salem, Virginia to face Winston-Salem State in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association volleyball semifinal rounds after sweeping Bowie State 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-11) in the quarterfinal round in Capel Arena.
Jessica Williams (Hiram, GA) led the Broncos (17-6 overall) with 11 kills while
Da'Nesha Miller (Hilton Head Island, SC) split duties with eight kills and 12 assists.
Xiamana Spikes (Raeford, NC) added six kills and blocks.
Shalom Omo-Osagie and Chelsea Beaudoin led Bowie State (6-18 overall) with four kills each.
Fayetteville State opened the match with a 6-1 run and had an 8-0 run to lead 18-7. Add in four kills by Miller and Williams, the Broncos ended the set at 25-16.
Bowie State opened the second stanza with a 6-2 lead after five Bronco errors and a kill by Caitland Okorafor but after a few errors of its own, FSU would tie the match at 8-all and continue its momentum to a 25-15 lead. The Broncos had three 3-or-more point runs in route to the win.
Fayetteville State went into cruise control after a 4-4 tie in the third set. The Broncos had a 7-0 run to hoist a 21-8 lead over the Bulldogs. A spike by Miller sealed the quarterfinal match for FSU.
Winston-Salem State, the South's No. 3 seed, defeated the North's No. 2 Virginia Union 3-0 in Richmond, Virginia. Virginia State swept Johnson C. Smith and Shaw did the same to Elizabeth City State.
