Fayetteville, NC – Fayetteville State had much to celebrate with its 66-20 homecoming win over Chowan in the Luther Nick Jeralds Stadium.
The Broncos held the high-powered offense of the Hawks to 20 points and 354 yards of total offense and gained a season high 608 yards of offense with
Stevie Green and
Johnnie Glaspie combining for 299 yards of the 487 yards rushing.
Fayetteville State improves to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the CIAA while Chowan drops to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
FSU scored first with a 42-yard field goal by
Elton Andrew but trailed 7-3 after Imeek Watkins scored on a 10-yard run for Chowan.
The Broncos unleashed 28-unanswered points from short drives.
Johnnie Glaspie scored the first from 79 yards out to cap a two-play drive for a total of 76 yards. Before the end of the first quarter,
Stevie Green rushed in from 68 yards for a 3-play 72-yard drive. Early in the second quarter with 12:04 remaining,
Darnell Walker closed out an 8-play drive for 70 yards with a three-yard touchdown rush.
Tyeous Sharpe then hauled in a 10-yard scoring reception for a five-play 48-yard scoring drive.
Before halftime, Chowan scored on a 75-yard drive, but the Broncos went into the locker room with a 31-14 lead after Green scored his second touchdown from 25 yards out with 1:14 left in the half.
After the halftime check presentations and the band performance, Fayetteville State scored two more touchdowns in the third quarter.
Elijah Henry pulled in a 14-yard pass from
Richard Latimer and Green rushed in for his third touchdown from 30 yards out.
After a Hawks score with 14:54 left in game, Fayetteville State put up two scores by
Darnell Walker. He plowed his way in from seven yards out and again from 11 yards.
Nigel Peele led the defense with ten tackles while
Keyshawn James finished with eight stops with three tackles for a loss of 25 yards and two and a half sacks for a loss of 24 yards.
Fayetteville State will host Shaw University (2-3 overall) in Luther Nick Jeralds Stadium on Saturday, October 12
th.
