Fayetteville, NC – After a tied ball game (61-61) with 2:58 left, Claflin took advantage of a 9-1 run to close out a 69-62 victory over Fayetteville State in Felton J. Capel Arena on a day the nation memorialized Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Joshua Byrant (Fayetteville, NC) tied the game-high 19 points as a non-starter to lead the Bronco effort.
Nakia Rivers (Charlotte, NC) drained a dozen points and
Denzell Hosch (Shelby, NC) finished with 11.
Fayetteville State (3-12 overall, 2-6 CIAA, and 1-1 Southern Division) suffered at the free throw line with 7-of-15 attempts made. Claflin (7-11, 6-7, 4-3) drained 10 out of 16 three-pointers and won the game on the line with 21-of-33 shots made.
The Broncos jumped to an early 11-point lead (19-8) at the 10:35 mark of the first half and led by 18 (35-20) with 4:11 left. Claflin utilized a 14-2 run to close out the half and trailed 31-37 at intermission.
Following the break, Fayetteville State controlled a small lead until Claflin captured its first lead of the game (56-55) with 6:53 remaining. Both teams battled back and forth until the game was tied at 61.
Claflin's Danny Brown also shot a game-high 19 points with four three-pointers made and 5-of-6 shooting from the line. Triston Thompson scored 17 points with three three-pointers. Austin Lawton was 6-of-11 from the charity stripe and was 5-of-5 from the floor for 16 points.
Fayetteville State will travel to Livingstone on Wednesday, January 23
rd for a tough divisional matchup in New Trent Gymnasium.
