Elizabeth City, N.C. (December 17, 2018) – A couple of turnovers proved costly as Fayetteville State dropped a 57-62 CIAA contest to Elizabeth City State (5-7; 3-0 CIAA) in the R.L. Vaughan Center in Elizabeth City, N.C.
The Broncos (1-8; 0-3 CIAA) trailed by three (57-60) with 1:19 remaining until a player control foul (turnover) led to the Vikings 17
th point off turnovers and a 62-57 victory. Although both teams committed 12 turnovers each for the game, FSU was only able to gain 12 points from the miscues.
Mark Burton led the game with 15 points, shooting 3-of-5 from three-point land and converting 6 of 7 free throws.
Xavier Williams also scored in double digits with 11 points.
Both teams played even-basketball with ECSU leading the field goal percentages with 44.1% to FSU's 39.2%. Fayetteville State played better at the line making 13 of 20 free throws compared to ECSU's 6-of-15. The two squads made four three-pointers each, but the Vikings held an advantage on the boards pulling down 12 more rebounds (44-32) than the Broncos.
Justin Faison led Elizabeth City State with 14 points. Joseph Allen scored a double-double with a dozen points and 14 rebounds. Shyheid Petteway had 10 points.
Fayetteville State will travel to UNC-Asheville on Saturday, December 29
th before starting the new year with conference opponents in 2019.
