Wilson, N.C. – The Fayetteville State women's basketball team faced a tough 51-38 outing Wednesday evening against undefeated Barton College (7-0 overall) at Wilson Gymnasium.
Shantel Bennett (Sanford, N.C.) and
Katisha Hyman (Chocowinity, N.C.) led the Broncos (3-3) with eight points each while
Aminata Johnson followed with seven points and seven rebounds.
Fayetteville State trailed 17-22 at the halftime break after shooting 25.9% (7 of 27) from the field. Barton shot 25% (8 of 32) but made 3-of-8 three-pointers for the lead.
FSU had a productive third period outscoring the Bulldogs 11-9 to trail by three (28-31) heading into the final stanza.
The three-point deficit doubled to six with 6:33 left in the game after three Bronco missed shots and a turnover. Fayetteville State scored its last field goal of the game with 3:13 left when
Shaiquanda James hit a jumper from a dime pass from
Shantel Bennett. Barton took advantage of FSU's cold spell to push the 46-38 advantage to a 51-38 victory in the final three minutes of the game.
Kianna Wynn led the Bulldogs with 18 points with help from Shanika Peterkin who netted 12.
FSU finished with a 29.6% shooting percentage (16 of 54) while Barton had a slightly better 33.9% (20 of 59). The Bulldogs held a 43-39 advantage on the boards and had three less turnovers than the Broncos 27. The Bulldogs scored 20 points off turnovers.
Fayetteville State will play in a 1:00 p.m. exhibition game on Saturday, December 1
st at UNC Wilmington.
