FSU Broncos Volleyball Ends Golden Bulls win-streak with a 3-2 Victory

Fayetteville, NC – The Fayetteville State University Broncos (3-9, 3-3 CIAA, 2-1 Div.) volleyball team protected home court in a tough 3-2 (25-20, 27-29, 20-25, 25-12, 15-11) home win against Johnson C. Smith University (11-6, 9-2 CIAA, 4-1 Div.) in a packed Felton J. Capel Arena.

Coach Resheemah Johnson said that for them to be successful in tonight's matchup, everyone has to step up to the plate in regard to the change-up in their roster and who they are up against. The Golden Bulls came into tonight's game No. 1 in the Southern Division and on a roll with a five-game winning streak.

"JCSU has a taller front row, so I expect my girls at the net to slow the ball down with blocks for our back row and make it easier on our defense. Our attackers must play smarter," said Coach Johnson.

The Broncos raced ahead with a 25-20 first set win. Big kills set the pace at the open of the second set from Bojo Jada. Teeya McLean and Diamond Holmes really listened to Coach Johnson about playing smarter at the net and were able to play aggressively at the net placing kills and dinks in holes and protecting the net with blocks.

McLean finished the match with 21 kills and eight blocks. Holmes played a really big game for the Broncos adding 11 kills and 15 digs.

Alexis Hollis and Nia Richardson assisted with great spot serving and back row defense. Richardson finished the match with 18 digs.

The second set was a tough nail-biting rally between both teams with the match going to the Golden Bulls, 29-27. Gorana Bogdanovic and Karizma Brooks tried to protect their winning streak with a 25-20 win over FSU for the third set. Bogdanovic added a double-double for the JCSU with 20 kills and 15 digs, Brooks added 12 kills. Taylor Hendrickson added 5 blocks at the net.

The Broncos pulled away in the final two sets midsts the Golden Bulls frustration. Their last set was sealed with attack errors from Bogdanovic and Smith. Double blocks from Jada and Jessica Williams ended tonight's contest moving the Broncos forward in the conference to 3-3 and 2-1 in the Southern Division.

Fayetteville State will travel to Winston Salem State University on Monday, October 8th to face off against the Rams at 6 p.m. for their next conference matchup.
