Fayetteville, NC ââ'¬" The Fayetteville State University women's volleyball team defeated the University of Mount Olive 3-1 (25-18, 25-23, 23-25, 25-17) on Tuesday, October 18th inside Felton J. Capel Arena. FSU improves to 11-5 overall and 6-0 at home, while the Lady Trojans drop to 10-11 in the standings.
The Lady Broncos pounced on Mount Olive early in the first set. UMO faced an 11-4 deficit 10 minutes into the contest. As the initial set continued, Fayetteville State eventually pushed their lead up to 20-9. Senior outside hitter Samira Luis (Willemstad, Curacao) closed the set with a kill for a 25-18 victory.
Mount Olive came out much more aggressive and efficient in the second set. The Lady Trojans recorded six consecutive points early on to grab an 11-4 advantage. FSU remained persistent and rallied to tie the set 20-20 with a block by Luis and sophomore middle blocker Bojo Jada (Jamestown, NC).
On set point, freshman setter Nakia McKinnie (Niceville, FL) provided an assist to junior middle hitter Jayde Jacobs (Fayetteville, NC) for a 25-23 win in set two. The Lady Broncos earned a 2-0 lead in the match with three straight points down the stretch.
The Lady Trojans managed to maintain a rhythm in the third set. Fayetteville State battled until the end, but UMO pulled out a 25-23 victory in the third.
FSU responded in the fourth set with the same vigor and energy as the first set. The Lady Broncos led by as much as 10 (20-10) in the fourth set en route to a 25-17 win.
Luis finished with a double-double of 12 kills and 12 digs, along with four block assists and two service aces. Jacobs chipped in eight kills and nine total blocks, including three solo blocks. Junior libero Arlicia Ortiz (Spanaway, WA) had a team-high 17 digs.
Fayetteville State returns to action on Saturday, October 22nd against division rival Shaw University. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Capel Arena.
