Carrollton, GA ââ'¬" The Fayetteville State University football team suffered a 57-27 loss to No. 2 nationally ranked University of West Georgia on Saturday, September 19th at University Stadium. FSU moves to 0-3 in the standings, while the Wolves improve to 3-0 overall.
Despite the lopsided outcome, Fayetteville State struck first in the contest with a new signal caller. Senior quarterback Derek Bryant (Carrboro, NC) sat out due to injury and freshman quarterback Jonathan Porter (Santa Clarita, CA) got his first career start.
On the opening drive, Porter drove the Broncos 82 yards down the field in five plays. He connected with senior wide receiver Chris Hubert (Apex, NC) for a 37-yard touchdown reception. FSU held West Georgia scoreless in the first quarter and maintained a 7-0 advantage entering the second.
The Wolves erupted with four touchdowns in the second quarter to grab a commanding lead. Wil Garrett scored the first TD with a rush from one yard out. Garrett was also successful running in the two-point conversion for an 8-7 lead for West Georgia. Dallas Dickey completed three touchdown passes for the other scores.
FSU trailed 29-7 entering the second half. West Georgia piled on two more touchdowns in the third quarter. The combination of Porter to Hubert produced a second TD for the Broncos. Porter found Hubert for a 29-yard touchdown reception. Fayetteville State still faced a 43-14 deficit entering the fourth and final quarter.
Both teams tacked on two more TDs in the fourth to account for the 57-27 final. Sophomore quarterback DeMarius Davis (Sarasota, FL) checked in and hit freshman wide receiver Gedari Liverman (Elizabeth City, NC) for a 75-yard touchdown reception.
With less than five minutes to play, junior defensive back Patrick McNeill (Dunn, NC) picked off Adam Holley and returned it 77 yards for the score.
Porter made his debut completing 10-of-21 passes for 175 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. Davis only threw the one pass to Liverman. Liverman caught two passes for a game-high 95 yards receiving with one TD. Hubert finished with three catches for 71 yard and two touchdowns.
West Georgia won the rushing battle with 303 yards on the ground compared to just 35 for the Broncos. The Wolves had double the time of possession (40:10) and converted 10-of-17 (58%) third downs, while FSU converted just 1-of-9 third downs.
The Broncos had four sacks, two turnovers, and one defensive touchdown. Junior cornerback Eric Henderson (Charlotte, NC) led the team in tackles with 10 (8 solo). Junior defensive end James York (Detroit, MI) and senior defensive tackle Rendall Mash (Charlotte, NC) each had a sack and a half.
Fayetteville State will enter their CIAA schedule in their next contest versus Virginia State University on September 26th. FSU travels to Ettrick, VA for televised 12:00 p.m. kickoff against the Trojans.
