Columbia, SC ââ'¬" The Fayetteville State University women's volleyball team defeated Benedict College 3-1 (25-23, 25-17, 24-26, 25-20) in non-conference action on Thursday, September 17th inside the Benjamin E. Mays Gymnasium. FSU improves to 2-4 overall, while the Lady Tigers fall to 1-2 in the standings.
The Lady Broncos jumped out to a commanding lead by winning the first two sets. Benedict fought hard but dropped the first set 25-23. FSU recorded the first six points in the second set to force a deficit. The Lady Tigers managed to tie the score (10-10), but could never take the lead.
Fayetteville State capped the second set 25-17 for a 2-0 advantage in the match. Benedict grabbed a 5-1 lead to start the third set. FSU battled back down the stretch and tied the set at 23-23. Aaliyah Lawson earned set-point for the Lady Tigers with a kill. A service error from JeNae Saunders tied the set again at 24-24.
Benedict won the third set with a kill from Lawson and then a FSU attack error. Fayetteville State still held a 2-1 lead going into the fourth set.
The Lady Broncos put a finale to the match with a 25-20 victory in the fourth. FSU recorded the last eight points of the set with senior utility Nikita Cheadle (Hope Mills, NC) on the service line.
Senior outside hitter Shavon Shaw (Bethel, NC) led the offensive attack with 16 kills, in addition to 18 digs, three block assists, and a service ace. Senior outside hitter Brittany McCoy (Smithfield, NC) added 11 kills, six digs and two service aces.
Sophomore middle hitter Jayde Jacobs (Fayetteville, NC) and senior middle hitter Ashley Britton (Henrico, NC) both chipped in six kills and three block assists. Senior utility Jessica Hardy (Fayetteville, NC) had a team-high 36 assists along with 13 digs and a solo block. Junior defensive specialist Briana Kelly (Fayetteville, NC) had a team-high 23 digs and two kills.
Fayetteville State enters conference competition for their next upcoming matches beginning on Saturday, September 19th against Elizabeth City State University in the CIAA Round-up. First serve is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium on the campus of Shaw University in Raleigh, NC.
Later in the day, FSU will face defending CIAA Champion Chowan University at 6:00 p.m. inside Emery Gymnasium on the campus of Saint Augustine's University.
