Aiken, SC ââ'¬" The Fayetteville State University women's volleyball team had a winless season-opening weekend in the USC-Aiken Volleyball Invitational hosted by the Pacers on September 11-12. FSU dropped a match to King University (3-0) and Belmont Abbey College (3-0) on Friday. The Lady Broncos fell short against Palm Beach Atlantic University (3-0) and Lees-McRae College (3-0) on Saturday afternoon.

Senior outside hitter Shavon Shaw (Bethel, NC) led the offensive attack and finished with a team-high 21 kills through the four matches. She also tallied 29 digs and five assists. Sophomore middle hitter Jayde Jacobs (Fayetteville, NC) supported the offensive effort with 15 kills, along with eight blocks (five solo) and three digs.

Senior outside hitter Brittany McCoy (Fayetteville, NC) debuted for the Lady Broncos with 13 kills, 16 digs, and six blocks. Senior middle blocker Ashley Britton (Henrico, NC) chipped in 13 kills, 10 blocks (five solo), four digs, and service ace in 12 sets played.

Senior utility Jessica Hardy (Fayetteville, NC) set her teammates up to the tune of 54 assists, as well as 32 digs and seven kills.

FSU started slow against King. The Lady Broncos fell in the first set 25-9, but pushed the second set to extra frames before falling 29-27. King closed out the match with a 25-18 victory in the third set.

Belmont Abbey dictated the pace of the match versus FSU. The Crusaders earned the win in three sets (25-9, 25-17, 25-11). Palm Beach Atlantic had similar success with a three-set victory (25-7, 25-8, 25-22) at the start of day two. The invitational weekend ended for Fayetteville State with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-8, 25-17) loss to Lees-McRae.

The Lady Broncos have the opportunity to rebound in their next match against Claflin University on September 15th. Match time is set for 6:00 p.m. in the Jonas T. Kennedy Center on the campus of Claflin in Orangeburg, SC.
