Wingate, NC ââ'¬" The Fayetteville State University women's basketball team suffered a 55-41 non-conference loss to Wingate University on Wednesday, December 30th at Cuddy Arena. FSU moves to 7-6 in the overall standings, while the Bulldogs improve to 5-3.
Wingate jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first two minutes of play. Sophomore guard Vernessa Hinnant (Selma, NC) closed the gap with a three-pointer at the 7:31 mark of the first quarter. Following a Bulldogs' turnover, senior center Bria Robinson (Belmont, NC) tied the game 7-7 with a jumper in the paint on the next possession.
The Bulldogs recaptured the lead and ended the first quarter with a 19-11 advantage. Fayetteville State was outscored 11-8 in the second and trailed throughout the quarter. The Lady Broncos faced a 30-19 deficit at the break.
Sophomore forward Courtney Best (Raleigh, NC) had eight points on 4-of-6 (66%) from the field. Kristina Rumplasch led the Bulldogs with seven points in just seven minutes off the bench.
In the third, Fayetteville outscored Wingate 10-7 to cut down the deficit. However, the Bulldogs beat FSU 18-12 in the fourth and held a double digit advantage for the majority of the final period.
The Lady Broncos shot 33% (19-56) from the floor and the free throw line (2-6). By comparison, Wingate connected on 42% (21-50) from the field and 64% (9-14) from the foul line.
Robinson finished with team-highs of 10 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks. Best concluded the contest with eight points and two steals. Hinnant added eight points, four rebounds, and three assists.
Rumplasch and Morgan McGee led the Bulldogs with 13 points each. Alex Tomlinson had 10 boards, six points, and six assists.
Fayetteville State returns to the court in the New Year against The Apprentice School on Monday, January 4, 2016. Game time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. in Newport News, VA.
