Salisbury, NC ââ'¬" The Fayetteville State University women's volleyball team defeated Livingstone College in three sets 3-0 (25-15, 26-24, 25-23) during a CIAA Southern Divisional match on Monday, October 26th at Trent Gymnasium. FSU improves to 8-9 overall, 6-4 in conference, and 5-2 in the division.
In the first set, senior outside hitter Shavon Shaw (Bethel, NC) broke an 8-8 tie with a monstrous kill. FSU recorded five consecutive points after the kill will senior middle hitter Ashley Britton (Henrico, NC) at the service line. Livingstone trailed by at least four points for the remainder of the set. Britton closed the first set (25-15) with a service ace.
The second set played down to the wire. Lareecia Swiney knotted up the set 24-24 with a kill. Sophomore outside hitter Jayde Jacobs (Fayetteville, NC) grabbed set-point on a successful attack off a pass from senior outside hitter Brittany McCoy (Smithfield, NC). Senior utility Nikita Cheadle (Hope Mills, NC) concluded set two (26-24) with an ace.
The Lady Blue Bears continued to show fight in the third set. Livingstone managed to play to a 23-23 even point. However, Fayetteville State recorded two consecutive points and earned the divisional match victory.
Jacobs and junior outside hitter Samira Luis (Willemstad, Curacao) each had nine kills. Senior utility Jessica Hardy (Fayetteville, NC) added 16 assists, eight kills and five digs. Shaw finished with 14 digs and five kills.
The Lady Broncos return home for their next match against Bluefield State College on Friday, October 30th. Match play is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Felton J. Capel Arena.
