Fayetteville, NC - The Fayetteville State University men's basketball team thumped Barton College 100-81 in a non-conference contest on Wednesday, November 26th at Felton J. Capel Arena. FSU improves to 4-2 overall and earns their third consecutive victory.
The Broncos throttled Barton for most of the ball game. Aside from an 11-11 tie at the 14:11 mark, FSU held a lead for the majority of the first half and throughout the entirety of the second. The Bulldogs trailed 48-36 at the half. Fayetteville State shot 50% (15-30) from the field led by the backcourt of senior guard Anthony Shelton (Cary, NC) and sophomore guard Joshua Dawson (Kinston, NC).
Dawson had a first half-high of 15 points, followed by Shelton with 11 points. Senior guard Devin Thompson (Fayetteville, NC) added nine points and three rebounds in the opening.
FSU extended their lead in the second half by jumping out to a 14-3 in the first three minutes of the period. Barton trailed by as much as 24 (92-68) and failed to cut their deficit below double digits in the second half.
Fayetteville State scored over 100 points for the second straight game. The Broncos have averaged 101 points and held their opponents to 79 points during the three-game win streak.
Five Broncos recorded double figures in points led by Shelton with a game-high 27 points, along with six rebounds. Redshirt freshman Carl McCray (Roper, NC) scored a new season-high of 24 points, surpassing his 20-point performance last game.
Dawson finished with 15 points, along with five assists. Thompson had 10 points, sophomore center Gatluak Thiep (London, England) nearly closed in on a double-double with 10 points and nine blocks. Junior guard Juwan Addison (Fairmont, NC) had a full stat line with 11 rebounds, seven points, six assists, but seven turnovers.
Danny Shand paced the Bulldogs with a team-high 19 points. Jake Veasley contributed to Barton's effort with 18 points and seven boards.
Fayetteville State returns to action on Saturday, November 29th against Newport News Apprentice I n the ECSU Classic hosted by Elizabeth City State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. inside the R.L. Vaughan Center.
The Broncos next home game is slated for Wednesday, December 3rd against nearby regional rival UNC Pembroke. FSU Athletics will be spearheading a "Toys for Tots" initiative and offering free admission in exchange for a toy donation. General admission is $10 and tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
