LATE 3-POINTER DOOMS BRONCOS IN 69-68 LOSS Elizabeth City State's Johnson Halts FSU Winning Streak

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - AJ Johnson's go-ahead 3-pointer with 4.4 seconds remaining proved to be the fatal blow in Fayetteville State's 69-68 defeat against Elizabeth City State at Felton J. Capel on Monday night.

The Vikings triple came on a play that started with 14.8 seconds to go after Joshua Dawson made one of two free throws to give the Broncos a two-point lead. After Johnson's 3, FSU turned the ball over to end the game.

Dawson finished with a team-high 15 points and had five assists. Tyrrel Tate had 10 points, eight rebounds and a pair of alley-oop dunks. Quentin Underwood had eight points and two alley-oops himself.

The loss drops FSU to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association play.

"We just didn't do some of the small things down the stretch on both ends," FSU coach Alphonza Kee said. "You go up to Christmas break and you're leading the league in 3-point shooting, and then the last three games we can't make a basket. We really have to tighten up other areas but it's conference time and I really respect (them)."

The Broncos hit just 3-of-15 shots from beyond the arc while the Vikings shot 9-of-22 (40.9 percent).

FSU grabbed its second half lead thanks to a 15-0 run to start the stanza. All four alley-oops happened after halftime, and it appeared the Broncos might have seized momentum and been in position to win handily.

But ECSU (6-7, 1-2) quickly cut it to 54-52 at the 10:57 mark on a Miykael Faulcon 3-pointer. The Vikings regained the lead with 7:35 to play on a Shaquil Barber tip-in.

The Broncos went back up by seven with 4:05 to play and held that same margin as the clock ticked under three minutes. But two Lashawn Alexander free throws, a Glenn Patterson 3 and two Faulcon free throws tied things up with 1:40 to play.

Dawson hit a layup to give FSU the lead and Dominique Byrd cut it back to a one-point game with a foul shot with 19 seconds left. Dawson then hit one of two free throws with 14 seconds left to set up ECSU's game-winner.

FSU outrebounded ECSU 35-30 and shot 51 percent (26-of-51) for the game.

The Broncos start a three-game road trip at Lincoln (PA) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
