CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Trevin Parks became the 25th player in Johnson C. Smith history to score 1,000 points in his career in leading the Golden Bulls to a 83-75 victory over Fayetteville State on Saturday night.
The CIAA's leading scorer at more than 24 points per game, Parks led all players with 28 points. He had 17 by halftime, making all 10 of his foul shot attempts, leaving him one point shy of 1,000 at the break.
Delonta Boyd added a double-double with 19 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for the Golden Bulls (9-9, 4-4, 2-0) while Antwan Wilkerson had 13 points and seven rebounds.
Tim Plummer (Sr., Apex, N.C.) led Fayetteville State (4-11, 2-5, 0-2) with his second double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds. John Herrington (Sr., Jacksonville, N.C.) added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Broncos.
Fayetteville State led the game in the early minutes, but the Golden Bulls gained control with an 11-2 run midway through the period, building a 24-16 lead with 8:58 to go in the half.
The Broncos managed to score five straight points to cut a later 10-point deficit to five, 39-34, with 2:57 remaining in the half, but Johnson C. Smith closed the period on a 11-6 stretch to take a 51-40 lead at the break.
The Golden Bulls built a 15-point lead less than 3:30 into the second half, but the Broncos refused to go away quietly.
Despite trailing by 13 after a three-point play by Boyd with 9 minutes remaining, Fayetteville State responded with a 13-5 run, getting a Sidney Evans (Sr., Durham. N.C.) 3-pointer at the 3:52 mark to cap the run and bring Fayetteville State within five, 72-67.
The Broncos, however, coluld get no closer in the final minutes.
Fayetteville State travels to take on Shaw at p.m. on Monday.
