FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Taylar Wells hit five 3-pointers and led all players with 20 points as the Winston-Salem State Lady Rams stayed unbeaten in league play after topping Fayetteville State 74-56 on Saturday at Felton J. Capel Arena.
Wells scored 14 points in the first half alone, hitting all four of her shot attempts from the field - each of them 3-pointers - to push the Lady Rams (12-5, 7-0) to a 23-15 lead with 8:12 to go in the first half.
That answered five straight points by the Lady Broncos (7-8, 1-5) to creep within two, and Winston-Salem State used a 12-5 spurt over 6:17 to build their largest lead, 29-20, with 2:08 to go in the opening period.
Fayetteville State trailed 30-23 at the break, getting eight points and five rebounds from Tierra Coleman (Jr., Cameron, N.C.), who hit a basket as the horn sounded to end the half after a pretty dish from Je'Lena Robertson (So., Houston, Texas).
But Wells got some help from Courtney Medley to start the second half. Medley had eight points in 8 minutes, sparking Winston-Salem State to a 20-8 spurt to open the second period. That gave the Lady Rams a comfortable 50-31 lead with 11:35 remaining in the game.
Fayetteville State was led by Akysia Resper's (So., Concord, N.C.) 16 points to go with nine rebounds, while Coleman added a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards. DaQuondra Cuthbertson (Jr., Spencer, N.C.) chipped in nine points and eight rebounds.
Medley and Jasmine Newkirk had 13 points apiece for the lady Rams.
Fayetteville State travels to Johnson C. Smith next Saturday.
