LADY BRONCOS OPEN VOLLEYBALL SEASON WITH IMPRESSIVE WINS

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Fayetteville State Lady Broncos' volleyball team came away from its first weekend of play with a winning record to open the 2011 season, picking up a CIAA victory in the process.

Fayetteville State debuted its 2011 squad on Friday and Saturday at the Johnson C. Smith Volleyball Invitational at Brayboy Gymnasium. There, the Lady Broncos split four matches against quality competition, coming away with straight-set victories over Johnson & Wales and Asumption.

The Lady Broncos (3-2, 1-0 CIAA, 1-0 Southern Division) also earned their first league win of the season with a straight-set victory over Southern Division rival Johnson C. Smith on Sunday.

Fayetteville State beat Johnson & Wales by the scores of 25-23, 25-11 and 25-21 in their Invitational opener, getting a match-high 12 kills from Octavia Wynn (Jr., Hope Mills, N.C.) and nine from Joi Emanuel (Jr., Charlotte, N.C.). LaToya Harvin (Fr., Belle Glade, Fla.) and Ifeyinwa Nwkolo (Jr., Greensboro, N.C.) added seven kills apiece while JaMisha Jordan (So., Fayetteville, N.C.) had a match-high 27 assists to go with eight digs. Decausha McLean (So., Laurinburg, N.C.) led the Lady Broncos with 11 digs.

Against Assumption on Sunday, Fayetteville State prevailed 25-22, 25-21 and 25-17, getting 15 kills from Wynn and 26 assists from Jordan, who also had a game-high 16 digs.

And in the victory over the Golden Bulls, the Lady Broncos cruised to a 25-9, 25-13 and 25-17 win as Wynn again led the team in kills with seven while Emanuel and Nwokolo added six apiece.

Fayetteville State dropped matches to Palm Beach Atlantic (3-0, 25-16, 25-11, 25-22) and Brevard (3-1, 25-17, 25-19, 17-25 and 25-19). Against Brevard, Emanuel finished with 10 kills to pace the Lady Broncos while Wynn added nine and Jordan had 25 assists.

Fayetteville State will compete in the Mt. Olive Tournament at Mt. Olive College, playing four matches over the weekend. The Lady Broncos will face Mt. Olive at 4 p.m. on Saturday before taking on Lander at 8 p.m. On Sunday, Fayetteville State is scheduled to play Elizabeth City State at 10 a.m. and then North Greenville at 2 p.m.
