LADY BRONCOS FINISH ROUNDUP WITH ENCOURAGING 4-2 MARK

Sept. 19, 2011

Final Stats

HAMPTON, Va. - The easy victories the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos accumulated at the CIAA Roundup over the weekend say about as much as their two close losses.

The Lady Broncos are again contenders in the CIAA.

With a key Southern Division game at home against rival Winston-Salem State approaching at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, the Lady Broncos finished 4-2 at the roundup over the weekend in Hampton, Va., signaling even in their defeats they are capable of making some noise by the time the end-of-season CIAA Tournament rolls around in November.

The Lady Broncos, who evened their overall record at 8-8 and improved their conference mark to 5-2, easily swept past Virginia Union, Bowie State, Virginia State and Lincoln in straight sets over the course of three days. In those matchups, Fayetteville State was never threatened, allowing an opponent to score more than 20 points in a single set just once in the 12 total sets played.

The Lady Broncos did fall to Northern Division stalwarts Chowan and Elizabeth City State, but still managed to make the top teams in the division earn their respective victories.

Fayetteville State lost 3-1 to Chowan, which had opened its season winning nine of its first 12 matches, including five straight wins in CIAA play. Still, the Lady Broncos took the first set, 25-23, before Chowan prevailed in the final three games to earn the match win.

Later in the weekend, Fayetteville State nearly knocked off the Lady Vikings, taking a 2 sets to 1 lead before falling in perhaps the best match of the weekend. Elizabeth City State won by the scores of 17-25, 25-23, 21-25, 26-24 and 15-10.

Lady Broncos' setter JaMisha Jordan (So., Faetteville, N.C.) had 50 assists in the match while Octavia Wynn (Jr., Hope Mills, N.C.) had a team-high 17 kills. Nikita Cheadle (So., Hope Mills, N.C.) had 13 kills while Joi Emanuel (Jr., Charlotte, N.C.) had 10 kills. Decausha McLean (So., Laurinburg, N.C.) had a game-high 28 digs while Wynn added 20 in the match.

Jordan topped 22 assists in five of the six matches, while the Lady Broncos continued to get balanced play throughout its lineup from the likes of Ifeyinwa Nwokolo (Jr., Greensboro, N.C.) and LaToya Harvin (Fr., Belle Glade, Fla.).

Fayetteville State will now turn its focus to Southern Division play. After opening divisional play with an easy win over Johnson C. Smith over the opening weekend of the season, Fayetteville State will face Winston-Salem State at home on Tuesday before traveling to take on Livingstone in Salisbury on Friday.

The results from the roundup play were: FSU 3, Virginia Union 0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-18) FSU 3, Bowie State 0 (25-17, 25-9, 25-13) Chowan 3, FSU 1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-14, 24-13) Elizabeth City State 3, FSU 2 (17-25, 25-23, 21-25, 26-24, 15-10) FSU 3, Lincoln 0 (25-9, 25-18, 25-11) FSU 3, Virginia State 0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-15)
