EVANS, PLUMMER LIFT BRONCOS OVER FALCONS

Feb. 5, 2011

Final Stats

RALEIGH, NC - Sidney Evans had a huge game, perhaps the biggest of any Fayetteville State player this season.

And the Broncos needed every bit of it.

Evans recorded his sixth double-double of the season, finishing a point shy of his career high to score 23 points and pull down a Fayetteville State season-high 19 rebounds as the Broncos used a late run over the last 7 minutes to pick up a 77-68 victory on the road over St. Augustine's on Saturday evening.

Evans (Jr., Durham, NC) made 10 of 16 shots from the field and had nine offensive rebounds - the Falcons as a team had 11 - to have his biggest performance since he led the Broncos with 24 points and 13 rebounds in a loss to Florida Tech in December.

Still, Fayetteville State (10-9, 6-5, 2-2) needed every last bit of Evans' strong performance to go with Tim Plummer's first career double-double in order to knock off the Falcons (6-13, 4-6, 1-3). Fayetteville State seemed on the cusp of running away with the game after a minor run handed the Broncos a 49-38 lead with 16:27 remaining.

But St. Augustine's came storming back, using a 12-1 run over the next 3 minutes to tie the game at 50. The Falcons took their biggest lead of the second half, 63-59, on Jon Kindred's 3-pointer with 6:53 to go, capping a 9-2 spurt.

That was the last field goal St. Augustine's made until the final seconds of the game. Evans responded with a dunk to pull FSU within one, and Plummer (Jr., Apex, NC), who had 20 points and 10 rebounds, added two foul shots to give Fayetteville State the lead again, 65-64, with 5:07 remaining.

The Broncos began to pour it on from there. John Herrington (Jr., Jacksonville, FL) had a layup, Plummer added a foul shot, and after two Andre Best (So., Raleigh, NC) free throws, Plummer put together a 3-point play for a 72-66 FSU edge with 1:21 to go.

St. Augustine's was then forced to foul - not a bad idea against the Broncos, who finished the game just 18 of 37 from the foul line (48.7 percent). But FSU made 5 of 7 from the stripe over the final 3 minutes to preserve the victory.

The game was back and forth through the first 10 minutes until Fayetteville State's Ariel Robinson (Sr., Coral Springs, FL) and Seth Hawkins (So., Greensboro, NC) scored five points apiece in a 17-2 run to give the Broncos a 38-28 lead with 2:01 left until the half. St. Augustine's, though, scored two buckets in quick succession with under a minute remaining to trim the halftime deficit to six, 38-32.

Kindred led the Falcons with 16 points while Darrell Glass, Shaun Washum, Nick Chamblee and Jeremy Banks each had nine points.

The victory moves the Broncos to 5-5 on the road. A year ago, Fayetteville State won just one game away from home and finished 1-10 outside of Felton J. Capel Arena.

The Broncos travel to play Johnson C. Smith at 7:30 p.m. on Monday in Charlotte. Fayetteville State, which has won five of its last eight games, stunned the then-league unbeaten Golden Bulls 77-73 on Jan. 29 in Fayetteville.
