BARTON SCORES VICTORY OVER FAYETTEVILLE STATE

Dec. 10, 2011

Final Stats

WILSON, N.C. -- Faith Hunter and Janae Jackson scored 17 points apiece as the regionally-ranked Barton Lady Bulldogs downed Fayetteville State 80-57 on Saturday at Wilson Gymnasium.

Fayetteville State (4-2) jumped out to an 8-2 lead less than 3 minutes into the game, getting buckets from different players. But the Lady Broncos could not hold off two big Barton (5-4) scoring runs in the first half.

Jackson and Hunter combined to score 17 points in a 19-6 run to give the Lady Bulldogs, who are ranked sixth in the Southeast region in the latest poll, the lead in the first half, as they managed to build a 25-16 lead after a sluggish start.

Jackson, who scored 11 points in the opening period, added another bucket to help spark a late spurt to close the first half. And with Jolanda Mitchell adding nine points off the bench, the Lady Bulldogs used a 14-4 run to close the period with their largest lead, 41-25.

Barton continued to add to its lead after the break, holding the Lady Broncos without a score for more than 6 1/2 minutes. Hunter had seven points in a 13-0 spurt in that span less than 7 minutes into the second half, handing Barton a 54-28 lead with 13:21 remaining in the game.

Bria Robinson (Fr., Belmont. N.C.) paced the Lady Broncos with 16 points and a career-high 12 rebounds while Akysia Resper (So., Concord, N.C.), the CIAA's leading scorer, added 10 points. Robinson had previously set her career-high in points with 17 last week in a victory over St. Andrews.

"Bria is really learning to play at this level," said Fayetteville State head coach Eva Patterson-Heath. "She played very well today with the absence of one of our top post players."

The Lady Broncos were without forward Tierra Coleman (Jr., Cameron, N.C.), who had career-highs of 18 points and 17 rebounds in the win over St. Andrews.

Mitchell added 14 points for Barton.

Fayetteville State travels to play Alderson-Broaddus on Tuesday.
