MURFREESBORO , NC - The Fayetteville State Lady Broncos made runs at it. They just couldn't completely close the gap.
After trailing by 11 at the half, the Lady Broncos trimmed the deficit to just four points several times in the second half. Still, they could never get any closer as Chowan managed to hold off Fayetteville State 56-50 in a CIAA game on Saturday.
Chowan (4-6, 1-1) picked up its first CIAA win of the season, with Ransheda Jennings scoring 21 points to lead all players while teammate Talaya Lynch notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Both teams got off to a slow offensive start in the game but the Hawks were able to take a 31-20 lead into the halftime break after Jennings put up 13 first-half points. Chowan's perimeter defense held the Lady Broncos to just seven made first half baskets while converting 48 percent (11-23) themselves in the first 20 minutes of play.
Chowan took advantage of 29 FSU turnovers and scored 25 points off those Lady Broncos miscues. The Hawks went 21-31 from the foul line in the game but were outrebounded 47 to 37 in the game. Chowa's Najah Harris put up 11 points and had four steals while Lynch's double-double was paired up with four assists and four steals.
For Fayetteville State (1-9, 0-2), Tierra Coleman (So., Cameron, NC) scored a team-high 15 points and had 11 rebounds while battling foul trouble. LaQuasha Jordan (Jr., Greenville, NC), who also battled foul trouble, chipped in 11 points while Tiffany Haywood (Sr. Fayetteville, NC) came off the bench to score 11 points and get 12 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season.
Fayetteville State will travel to Elizabeth City State on Monday.
