FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Brittany Jackson made four 3-pointers and had 14 points and six rebounds as Bowie State downed Fayetteville State 65-55 in women's basketball at Felton J. Capel Arena on Thursday night.
Juliette Turner added 14 points as the Lady Bulldogs (5-3, 1-0) held the Lady Broncos (1-8, 0-1) to 32 percent shooting from the floor.
The Lady Broncos were led by LaQuasha Jordan (Jr., Greenville, NC), who fought foul trouble in the second half and finished with 17 points, making four 3-pointers. SheQuitia Manning (Jr., Capital Heights, MD) added 14 points and seven rebounds. Tiffany Haywood (Sr., Fayetteville, NC), the Lady Broncos' leading scorer and the leading rebounder in the CIAA, was held to a season-low four points to go with seven boards. Tierra Coleman (Jr., Cameron, NC) had a team-high eight rebounds.
Fayetteville State was in the game in the early going, and by being active on defense, trailed just 11-9 10 minutes into the game.
But the Lady Bulldogs, with Jackson knifing through the lane for offensive rebounds and scoring opportunities, responded with an 11-2 run to take control of the first half. Bowie State led 29-16 at the break.
Fayetteville State fell behind by 18 early in the second half, and behind the Jordan and Manning, tried to get back into the game midway through the period. The Lady Broncos trimmed the deficit to 12 three times before Bowie State ripped off a 12-4 run over a 5-minute stretch, getting 3s from Jackson and Breana Taylor to spark the spurt and give the Lady Bulldogs a 20-point advantage with 7:27 remaining.
