FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Rhon'Neisha Taylor led all players with 23 points to lead the Virginia State Lady Trojans to a 79-55 victory over the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos at Felton J. Capel Arena on Wednesday night.
Pamela Muldrow nearly had a triple-double with 10 points, eight assists and seven rebounds as the Lady Trojans (10-4, 4-2) got off to a hot start and never looked back. Morgan McGill added 11 points while Mariame Sylla had 11 points and Janelle McDowell had 10 for Virginia State., which shot 57 percent from the field.
The Lady Broncos (5-12, 3-5) were led by Je'Lena Robertson (Fr., Houston, TX), who recorded a new career-high with 15 points to go with four steals and three assists. Amanda Sinclair (Jr., Red Springs) had 12 points while Tiffany Haywood (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) added eight points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Virginia State made 11 of its first 15 shots to race out to a 26-7 lead, using a 14-2 run to fuel the hot start. The Lady Broncos fought their way back into the game with a 20-9 stretch over the span of 7:44 to cut the deficit to six, 35-29, with 2:15 left in the half.
But after a sluggish start to the second half for both teams, Virginia State effectively took control with an 11-0 run to open the period.
Fayetteville State hosts Johnson C. Smith at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
