Final Stats
WINSTON-SALEM -- LaQuasha Jordan did everything she could to carry the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos back.
Jordan (Jr., Greenville, NC) scored 15 of her game-high 22 points in the second half to nearly lift the Lady Broncos to a come-from-behind victory at Winston-Salem State on Saturday night. But the Lady Rams had just enough to hold off Fayetteville State 55-51.
After the Lady Broncos (4-11, 3-4) struggled to shoot just 23 percent from the field in the first to trail 25-18 at the break, Jordan caught fire early in the second half, scoring eight points in a span of 3 minutes to fuel a 12-0 Fayetteville State run that handed the Lady Broncos a 33-29 lead with 13:26 left in the game.
Winston-Salem State (11-6, 6-2) responded with a 10-4 spurt to regain the lead, but never led by more than five points the rest of the way.
Before it was all said and done, though, Jordan continued to keep the Lady Broncos in it, helping then to a 43-41 lead with 6:36 remaining. But again the Lady Rams answered, this time with seven straight points for a 48-43 lead with 4:30 left.
Fayetteville State's Je'Lena Robertson (Fr., Houston, TX) buried a jump shot with 8 seconds left to bring the Lady Broncos within two, 53-51. But Winston-Salem State's Jasmine Newkirk made two foul shots with 5 seconds to go to preserve the victory.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for Fayetteville State, which hosts the University of the District of Columbia at 5:30 p.m. on Monday at Felton J. Capel Arena. Jordan, though, scored 21 or more points for the third straight game, matching her season high with 22 points on Saturday. Robertson added eight points while Tiffany Haywood (Sr., Fayetteville, NC) chipped in seven points. Tierra Coleman (So., Cameron, NC) had a team-high eight rebounds.
Vontisha Woods led Winston-Salem State with 15 points and nine rebounds while Courtney Medley, who made several key shots down the stretch, added 14 points and nine rebounds as well.
