Final Stats
FAYETTEVILLE, NC - LaQuasha Jordan found herself wide open.
But then again, of course she was. She was 26 feet from the basket.
With no defender believing she'd actually attempt the shot, Jordan sized up the rim and let it fly. She made four 3-pointers in Saturday's win over St. Paul's.
And she made this one. Without the ball even grazing the rim.
Jordan (Jr., Greenville, NC) continued her recent hot shooting, scoring a team-high 21 points as the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos won their third straight game - and third straight in league play - with a convincing 76-63 victory over Virginia Union at Felton J. Capel Arena on Thursday night.
With suffocating fullcourt defense, Jordan and Co. got the Lady Broncos (4-10, 3-3) off to a quick start as she combined with Tierra Coleman (So., Cameron, NC) and Amanda Sinclair (Jr., Red Springs, NC) to score 16 of Fayetteville State's first 22 points as the Lady Broncos romped to a 26-13 lead midway through the first half.
Jordan, who also pulled down nine rebounds, had a hot start against St. Paul's as well, fueling the Lady Broncos' decisive 21-0 first-half run with four field goals - including two 3-pointers - to score 11 points in the early going. She finished with a season-high 22 against the Lady Tigers.
Virginia Union, behind its own hot shooting by Valentina Wheeler, got back into the game for a bit following the Lady Broncos' quick opening. Wheeler's corner 3-pointer as the shot clock wound down got the Lady Panthers (0-12, 0-5) within three points, 26-23, after a 10-0 spurt with 6:15 to go in the half.
But that was the last field goal Fayetteville State allowed in the opening period, holding Virginia Union to 25 percent shooting from the floor in the half while rushing to a 10-2 run to close the half, with Coleman making a baby hook as the buzzer sounded to give the Lady Broncos a 36-25 lead at the break.
Jordan's deep 3 got the Lady Broncos rolling again in the second half, and after a Capricia Smalls (Fr., McLeansville, NC) basket, the run went to a 17-4 spurt spanning the break. Jordan then added a three-point play after a pretty head fake to cap her coast-to-coast drive, and Tiffany Haywood (Sr. Fayetteville, NC) added her own three-point play, giving Fayetteville State its biggest lead to that point, 51-31, with 14:52 remaining in the game.
The Lady Broncos later added a 14-3 run to take a 65-40 lead with 6:48 to go. Jordan added another three-point play as Fayetteville State built its biggest lead, 74-46, with 3:26 to go.
Coleman finished with another strong game for the Lady Broncos, scoring 12 points to go with eight rebounds. Haywood enjoyed her sixth double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 boards as Fayetteville State held a substantial 68-40 edge in rebounding over the Lady Panthers. SheQuitia Manning (Jr., Capital Heights, MD) added a team-high 11 rebounds.
Wheeler finished with a game- high 22 points to go with six rebounds. Leslie Slayton added 12 points as Virginia Union shot 22 percent from the field.
Fayetteville State travels to play Southern Division rival Winston-Salem State on Saturday. Tipoff is 5 p.m.
