Final Stats
ELIZABETH CITY, NC - Perhaps the approaching winter storm hit Elizabeth City at that precise time. Because the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos went ice cold.
After hitting 9 of their first 18 shots, the Lady Broncos did not have a field goal for a 13-minute, 45-second stretch spanning halftime as the Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings used a 30-3 run to take control of the game in a 69-42 victory over the Lady Broncos on Monday night.
Courtney Small (Fr., Roanoke, Rapids, NC) made a layup with 8:15 to go in the first half, giving the hot-shooting Lady Broncos (1-10, 0-3) a 22-9 lead. But Fayetteville State had just three points from there before the half - all from the foul line - as the Lady Vikings found their groove.
Elizabeth City State (9-4, 2-1) opened the second half on a 12-0 run to expand the game-changing spurt to take a 39-25 lead with 15:13 to go. The Lady Broncos' LaQuasha Jordan (Jr., Greenville, NC) finally broke the cold snap with a deep 3-pointer at the 13:45, giving Fayetteville State some hope. Buoyed by the made jumper, the Lady Broncos proceeded to rip off an 8-0 run to get back into the game, closing within six points, 39-33, with 11:53 remaining in the game.
But the Lady Vikings answered right back. Kenyatta Gill bookended two 3s around a Briana Glover jumper from long range, sparking an 11-1 run to make it 50-34 with 9:06 left.
Gill led all players with 11 points while Shaquella Johnson added 10 points.
No Lady Broncos' player reached double figures, with four players recording a team-high six points each.
