By ALEX PODLOGAR

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Following Wednesday's season-opening match, Fayetteville State volleyball coach Rasheemah Johnson said the Lady Broncos would have a better sense where they may match up in the CIAA after the weekend roundup at Winston-Salem.

For a program that has played in the last three CIAA Tournament finals, the Lady Broncos just may be picking up where they left off.

In four matches spanning Saturday and Sunday, Fayetteville State finished the weekend nearly unblemished, winning three times, with two of its matches ending in three-set sweeps that took no longer than 53 minutes each.

On Saturday, FSU (5-0, 5-0 in CIAA play) clubbed Bowie State 25-21, 25-6 and 25-16, getting 14 kills from All-CIAA outside hitter Samantha Meeks and 27 assists from setter Achari Mainor, also an All-CIAA selection. Also on Saturday, the Lady Broncos thumped St. Paul's 25-9, 25-8 and 25-5, in a match that took a measly 45 minutes to complete.

In that contest, Meeks added 13 kills while Mainor had 26 assists. Sierra Gilmore chipped in seven kills.

Fayetteville State enjoyed another straight-set victory on Sunday, getting past Virginia State 25-20, 25-19 and 25-22, on the balanced strength of 10 kills from Meeks, eight from Ifeyniwa Nwokolo, seven from Octavia Wynn and six from Joi Emanuel. Mainor had 33 assists in that match while adding 11 digs. Cailee Huffman had a team-high 16 digs.

The Lady Broncos received their stiffest competition in a five-set defeat to Chowan on Sunday, falling in a match that took nearly two hours to complete. Meeks finished with a team-high 16 kills, but got plenty of help from Nwokolo (13 kills) and Emanuel (10 kills). Mainor had a game-high 29 assists while five players recorded four or more digs. Mainor and Molly Farrington had four service aces apiece in the match.

Fayetteville State travels to play CIAA rival Winston-Salem State on Wednesday. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
