FAYETTEVILLE - Taylor Hughes' layup as time expired gave Chowan a 64-62 win over Fayetteville State on Monday.
The game ended with a flurry of action.
Both teams turned the ball over in the final five seconds. The Hawks' Brittany Nicholson drove to the lane and the shot clock expired with 0.3 seconds remaining.
However, the shot clock buzzer didn't go off. The officials huddled and ruled that a shot clock violation occurred with an inadvertent whistle. The possession arrow was used which gave the ball to Chowan.
The Hawks (8-13, 5-11 CIAA, 1-5 Western Division) took advantage of the extra possession and handed FSU only its second home loss of the season.
"We had a breakdown on defense," head coach Eva Patterson-Heath said of the game's final play. "I'll have to take a look at the tape and see what happened but she (Hughes) was wide open."
Despite the loss, FSU (14-7, 10-5, 5-1) still has a one-game lead in the Western Division.
Five Broncos finished with eight points or more. Senior guard L'oreal Price had a team-high 14 points, Amanda Owens and Tiffany Haywood had nine each while Deja Middleton and LaQuasha Jordan contributed eight apiece.
