FSU FALLS TO HAWKS

Feb. 8, 2010

Final Stats

FAYETTEVILLE - With nine minutes left in the second half of Fayetteville State's 75-59 loss to Chowan on Monday, the outcome had long been decided.

But, down by as much as 37 points in the second half, FSU (6-14, 3-11 CIAA, 1-4 Western Division) closed the game on a 29-8 run with mostly reserve players.

It's that kind of fight that Alphonza Kee, the Broncos' first-year head coach, wants to consistently see from his team.

"We have a team of character, toughness and tenacity," Kee said. "We don't quit on people. For some reason we got thrown a knockout punch and couldn't recover at all. It happens - we'll be better on Thursday (against Shaw)."

The Hawks (14-7, 10-5, 3-2) led 33-17 and held FSU to 38.3 percent shooting for the game.

Jamel Carpenter led FSU with 18 points and was the only Broncos player to score in double figures.

Seniors Davon Hood and Larry Ross and guard Mounda Williams had six points each. Hood had a game-high nine rebounds.

Monday's game was the third of five-straight contests inside Capel Arena for FSU. The Broncos host Shaw on Thursday and Johnson C. Smith on Feb. 13.

The game on Feb. 13 against JCSU will begin at 5 p.m. and be televised nationally by the Urban Sports & Entertainment group. Tipoff for FSU's game against Shaw is set for 7:30 p.m.

Four CU players - Lando Morrison, Mark Brown, Charles Rhodes and Jaleel Nelson - had 12 or more points. Brown tallied 17 points in 39 minutes of action. The Hawks shot 54.3 percent from the field and made nine of their 21 3-pointers.
