HAMPTON, VA - The Fayetteville State Lady Broncos pulled out an upset win over the top-ranked CIAA Northern Division Elizabeth City State University Lady Broncos in a thrilling pool play match late Friday night.
The Lady Broncos came into the match as the second seed out of the Southern Division and knocked off the top-seeded Lady Vikings in straight sets. Both teams will advance to the semifinals Saturday night.Fayetteville State outhit ECSU 42 to 35 in the match and picked up nine points off of service aces. Octavia Wynn and Samantha Meeks posted double-digit kills for FSU to help propel them to the straight-sets win. Achari Mainor collected 33 assists and had nine digs in the FSU win.
Fayetteville State won with final set scores of 25-20, 28-26 and 27-25. They improve to 16-7 on the year after the win. The Lady Broncos went 3-0 in Friday's pool play, and are set to play Chowan University at 5 p.m. Saturday in the first semifinal match.
For ECSU Lia Scott posted 13 kills and Regan Simpson had 20 assists.The Lady Vikings came into the late match undefeated in pool play with earlier match wins over Livingstone and Virginia State. The Lady Vikings move to 22-6 after the match. Elizabeth City State will play Saint Augustine's College Saturday in the second semifinal set for 7:00pm.
