Fayetteville, NC - Fayetteville State (10-6, 5-5 CIAA) held a slim three point lead (55-52) with 2:22 remaining in regulation. Shaw (6-11, 3-6 CIAA) closed the gap to one with 1:47 left and forced the Broncos into a turnover on the following possession. With the ball on the other side of the court, the Broncos failed to grab two missed layups and turned the ball over after a third missed shot. Will Graham hit two free throws, with 20 seconds remaining, to put Shaw up by one. On a last second desperation shot by the Broncos, Graham grabbed the game securing rebound with four seconds ticking away. The Bears led by two at the half 30-28.
Andy Gebru (Orlando, FL) scored a season high 16 points to lead the Broncos. Eddie Brown (Petersburg, FL) scored 13 points in addition to DeShaune Griffin (Fayetteville, NC) who put in ten points to assist in the effort. Fayetteville State shot 42.6% in field goals and 65% in free throws. Griffin hit the only two 3-pointers while the Broncos attempted ten for the game.
While the lead changed hands five times, it was tied six times. The advantage tipped in favor of the Bears when they scored 17 points from second-chance opportunities. FSU only had six points from put-backs. Shaw struggled in the field with 37.7% shooting and 64.7% in free throws. The Bears was one behind the Broncos in rebounds, 34-35. Raheem Smith led Shaw with 15 points.
Fayetteville State will look to bounce back into the win column this Saturday when the Broncos travel to Saint Paul's College for a 7:30 pm tipoff.
