Fayetteville, NC - Fayetteville State (10-4, 5-3 CIAA) faced a tough Saint Paul's "Tigers" in Capel Arena and defeated them 73-67. Davon Hood (Charlotte, NC) made all seven of his shot attempts, scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help the Broncos in the win. Darshawn Johnson (Brooklyn, NY) led the game with 17. FSU steadily increased its lead in the first half to a (35-22) 13-point lead.
Fayetteville State could only increase the lead to 14 with 14:22 remaining before the Tigers' trapping defense forced the Broncos to commit 12 turnovers in the half. The TOs were converted to 13 points for Saint Paul's. Once the ball made it past half court, The Broncos shot 57.1% (12 of 21) from the field to secure the win.
Saint Paul's (3-8 overall, 3-5 CIAA) struggled with the goals in Capel Arena as they shot 35.8% for the game. The poor shooting breaks down to 25.7% in the first and 46.9% in the second half. SPC came within four points with 3:49 remaining by securing the points off of turnovers and out scoring FSU in 2nd-chance points. The Tigers had ten more offensive rebounds than the Broncos (17-7).
Maurice Reevy and Anthony Wynn finished the night for the Tigers with double-doubles. Reevy had 15 points and 10 rebounds while Wynn totaled 10 points and 11 rebounds. Davon West and Bruce Royal also finished in double figures with 13 and 10 points respectfully.
Eddie Brown (St. Petersburg, FL) was the man in the first half. Eddie, along with Johnson, led all with eight points each. The Broncos made 15 of its 32 shots (46.9%) compared to the Tigers 9 of 35 (25.7%). FSU had ten points off of SPC's ten turnovers for the half-time lead.
Fayetteville State will host Elizabeth City State in a nationally televised game on Saturday, January 17. The game will be produced by Urban Sports Entertainment and ESPN Regional Television. Tip-off is at 5:00 pm
