Sept. 3, 2008

Final Stats

Pembroke, NC - The Fayetteville State University women's volleyball team wilted under the offensive attack of UNC-Pembroke's Allie Schneider and Rachel Young, who tallied 23 kills against the Lady Broncos en route to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-11, 25-16) Lady Braves' victory on Tuesday evening at the English E. Jones Center.

This was the home opener for the 2008 season at UNC-P and approximately 582 spectators were on hand to watch these two Division II Atlantic Region rivals square off at the net. The Lady Braves racked up 41 kills as a team off 109 attack attempts, while FSU recorded 22 kills off 111 attempts.

Both team left the court with an identical 2-3 record, with the Lady Braves improving and Fayetteville State dropping in the standings. FSU Head Coach Elorine Hill said she's not too concerned about the early obstacles. "We need to go against good competition earlier," said Hill. "Our team started off rough last season and it helped us recognize how strong we can be as a team. We're young and my new girls will benefit from these early tests," continued Hill.

The Lady Broncos were led on offense by junior middle blocker Chekimbrell Jefferson who finished the night with 9 kills and an impressive .304 hitting percentage. Sophomore setter Achari Mainor tallied 16 assists for FSU, while also earning 10 digs. Sophomore libero Alexis Young also had 10 digs for the Lady Broncos.

Fayetteville State will travel to Wingate, NC, to participate in the Wingate Tournament of Champions. The Lady Broncos will face USC Aiken on Friday before playing Wingate and Lees-McRae on Saturday afternoon.
