Fayetteville, NC - The Fayetteville State Broncos picked up their second consecutive victory by shutout with a 28-0 win over St. Paul's College on Saturday evening from Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium. FSU improves to 3-1 in the overall standings and earn their first conference victory to move to 1-0 in the CIAA.
Senior quarterback Bryan Hardy returned to the starting line-up and led the Broncos to a touchdown on their second offensive possession. Hardy threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to sophomore receiver Matt Jenkins in the right corner of the end zone for the first score of the contest.
St. Paul's first offensive series in the second quarter went 11 plays, 70 yards and lasted six minutes. However, after a 44-yard missed field goal attempt by place kicker Nelson Davalos the drive would conclude with no points. The Broncos took over the ball and drove 74 yards in nine plays. Hardy connected with senior receiver Darryl Barnett for a three-yard touchdown reception.
Freshman place kicker Bryan Conner had the kick slide to the left on the extra point and the Tigers trailed 13-0 going into halftime.
The Broncos would end up in a 4th and two situation on the St. Paul's eight yard line in the third. Head Coach Kenny Phillips ' decision to go for it on fourth down paid off. Hardy threw a second touchdown pass to Barnett, this time an eight-yard reception that put FSU up 20-0 late in the third quarter.
Fayetteville State was awarded a safety and added two more points to the scoreboard. St. Paul's offense was penalized for holding on their own two-yard line. The penalty resulted in a Broncos' safety, and FSU was ahead 22-0 with 9:16 remaining.
After receiving the free punt, the Broncos went back to work on offense. Hardy completed his fourth and final touchdown pass to junior receiver Bobby Wilder. Conner missed the extra point attempt and 28-0 would be the final.
FSU threw for 289 yards as opposed to just 89 yards in the air for the Tigers. Senior linebacker Terrel Allen and junior linebacker Gerard Atkinson each got to the quarterback for a sack.
The Broncos leave the comforts of home and return to the road when they take on Virginia State University on Saturday, September 27th. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 pm from Rogers Stadium in Petersburg, VA.
