Final Stats
Fayetteville, NC - The Lady Broncos went unbeaten after three match-ups on the first day of the 2008 CIAA Volleyball Round-up from the Felton J. Capel Arena. Fayetteville State defeated Virginia State, St. Paul's, and Virginia Union in three straight sets to improve to 7-6 overall and 4-0 in the CIAA.
FSU took the down the Lady Trojans, 3-0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-16) in their initial contest. Sophomore outside hitter Samantha Meeks led the charge for the Lady Broncos in their first match against Virginia State. Meeks collected 13 kills off 22 attack attempts for a .455 hitting percentage. Junior right side hitter Cailee Huffman was also a catalyst on the offensive attack. Huffman racked up 12 kills and a game-high 16 digs versus VSU.
In the second match, Fayetteville State dismantled the Lady Tigers of St. Paul's College 3-0 (25-7, 25-17, 25-12). Senior right side hitter Heather Chance and junior middle blocker Chekimbrell Jefferson were an offensive force for FSU against St. Paul's. Chance had 11 kills and .556 hitting percentage, while Jefferson produced 10 kills and a .391 hitting percentage in only two sets played.
Sophomore setter Achari Mainor dished out 23 of the team's total 38 assists in the match-up. Chance also had a game-high 11 digs in the performance against SPC.
The Lady Broncos' final contest took place in the evening versus Virginia Union. This was the toughest competition of the day for FSU, despite winning 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-19). Jefferson was the key to success with 15 kills and a .684 hitting percentage. Mainor was credited with 26 assists. Fayetteville is currently on a five-game winning streak with victories all in three straight sets.
Fayetteville State returns to action Sunday morning for the second and final day of the CIAA Round-up. The Lady Broncos will play the Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State University at 10:00 am; and they will compete against Bowie State University at 2:00 pm.
