Fayetteville, NC - The Lady Broncos outscored North Carolina Central University 47-33 in the second half and claimed a 79-64 win against their former CIAA foe in women's basketball action Monday night in Capel Arena.
In the first half, NCCU took the lead and held on to it for much of the opening period. Amanda Owens tied the score at 25 with a three-pointer from the left wing at the 3:51 mark. FSU captured the lead for the first time off a free throw from junior forward Shacovia Sheppard, but quickly lost their advantage when the Lady Eagles scored in transition.
Tiffany Haywood regained the lead for Fayetteville State after making one of two free throws right before halftime. The bucket sent NCCU into the locker down 32-31 at the half.
Fayetteville State began the second half with a 19-2 scoring run that lasted more six and a half minutes. NCCU narrowed the margin to nine with 2:24 remaining. But, the Lady Broncos stayed consistent and coasted to a 79-64 victory.
Senior guard Leticia Dickson led the Lady Broncos with 25 points and two assists. Freshman forward Tiffany Haywood (Fayetteville, NC) added 14 points, 14 rebounds and four assists. Sophomore guard L' Oreal Price also had 13 points, five rebounds, and three steals for Fayetteville State. Freshman guard Amanda Owens (Fayetteville, NC) started for the first time this season and contributed 10 points, four rebounds, and four assists.
Forward Latoya Bennett led the Lady Eagles' attack with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
FSU improves to 14-8 overall and remains 10-3 in the CIAA. The Lady Broncos are 3-0 at home this season against non-conference opponents. North Carolina Central falls to 4-19 overall in their inaugural NCAA Division I season.
The Lady Broncos return to action on Saturday, February 9th when they take on the Lady Falcons of Saint Augustine's College in Raleigh, NC. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
