Fayetteville, NC - The Fayetteville State Lady Broncos closed out their regular season Thursday evening with a 73-64 divisional win over the Lady Blue Bears of Livingstone College from Capel Arena.
In the first half, FSU shot 55.6 percent (15-of-27) from the floor compared to 35.5 percent (11-of-31) for Livingstone. Only three Lady Broncos did not record a basket in the opening period. Fayetteville State's bench play contributed to their 38-27 halftime advantage. Livingstone's bench was outscored 17-to-4 to the first half.
The Lady Blue Bears faced a 21-point deficit by the 13:36 mark of the second half. It appeared as if FSU would run away with the contest. Livingstone did not submit quietly, putting together a 10-0 scoring run with 7:20 remaining that lasted nearly four minutes. A pair of free throws down the stretch from freshman forward Erica Gilley and junior forward Shacovia Sheppard quickly put the brakes on the Lady Blue Bears' comeback.
Despite the fact Fayetteville State was out-rebounded 55-to-47 and beat in the paint 52-to-26, the Lady Broncos earn the season sweep over Livingstone College. FSU made 22-of-33 attempts from the free throw for a 66.7 shooting percentage from the line.
Four Lady Broncos scored in double figures. Gilley led the way with a double-double performance of 14 points and 11 rebounds, sophomore center Randi' Watts had 13 points, Sheppard also pitched in a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore guard L' Oreal Price rounded off the top scorers with 10 points and six assists.
Lady Blue Bears forward had a game-high 28 points and 22 rebounds. The loss drops Livingstone to 6-20 for the season and 5-13 in conference play. FSU improves to 16-11 overall and 12-6 in the CIAA.
In their last performance as a Lady Bronco, senior guard Passion Phillips produced seven points and four assists, senior guard Leticia Dickson scored six points, and senior center Tenisha McArthur had four points and five rebounds.
FSU heads to the Charlotte Bobcats Arena for the 33rd Annual CIAA Women's Basketball Tournament. Tournament play begins Monday, February 25th.
