Fayetteville, NC - The Lady Broncos extracted some revenge on CIAA divisional foe Saint Augustine's College with a 79-72 victory inside Capel Arena on Saturday afternoon.
When these two teams met earlier this season, the Lady Falcons earned a 75-65 win on their home floor. Saint Augustine's got off to another winning start with a 15-5 run in the first seven minutes of the contest. FSU rebounded late in the period with 17-5 scoring run of their own to tie the score at 31 with a 1:26 remaining.
Senior guard Leticia Dickson scored seven points during the Lady Broncos' run, including a three pointer that evened the score. Dickson led the charge in the first half, accounting for 12 of Fayetteville State's 36 points. The Lady Falcons trailed at halftime 36-34. Both teams were turnover prone in the first half, Saint Augustine's committed 27 turnovers while FSU turned the ball over 21 times.
Four minutes into the second half, the Lady Broncos' lead grew to 10 off a jumper from senior forward Tenisha McArthur. At the 14:20 mark, Saint Augustine's sparked an 8-0 run that cut the lead to three. Guard Kelley Bural was fouled and sent to the free throw line to shoot two with 4:24 remaining. Bural made both shots to give SAC a 66-65 lead.
Fayetteville State would soon regain their advantage off two free throws by Dickson. Excellent free throw shooting down the stretch allowed FSU to hold on to the lead for the remainder of the contest. The Lady Broncos had a superb performance from the charity stripe against Saint Augustine's. FSU shot 95 percent (19-of-20) in the second half from the free throw and 85 percent (34-of-40) for the game.
Dickson led all scorers with 22 points, nailing 12 of 13 free throw attempts. Three other Lady Broncos scored double figures, including freshman forward Erica Gilley. Gilley was close to a double-double with 12 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore guard L' Oreal Price added 12 rebounds and 10 points, freshman Mercedes Humphries also scored 10 points.
Despite the loss, Saint Augustine's outscored FSU in the paint 40-22. Allison Sikes was the leading scorer for the Lady Falcons with 20 points. SAC drops to 17-9 overall this season and 12-5 in the CIAA. The Lady Broncos improve to 15-10 for the season and 11-5 in conference play.
The Lady Broncos play their last road game of the season when they travel to Charlotte, NC to face the Lady Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University. Tip-off is schedule for 5:30 pm from Brayboy Gymnasium.
