Fayetteville, NC - The Lady Broncos looked good in their pink uniforms worn to show support for Breast Cancer Awareness Week, but not on the court losing to Shaw University 90-78 on Thursday evening inside Capel Arena.
Despite the final score, the Lady Broncos showed a lot of fight early in the contest. FSU shot 46.2 percent (12-of-26) from the field and 85.7 percent (12-of-14) from the free throw line in the first half. Shaw beat the Lady Broncos 18-to-12 inside the paint and their bench scored 21 points.
Both teams went into the locker room at halftime tied at 39. In the second half, the Lady Bears shot 53.1 percent (17-of-52) compared to Fayetteville State's 30.6 shooting percentage (11-of-36) from the field.
This contest had nine ties and 12 lead changes. The glaring disparity that allowed the Lady Bears to seize the victory, were the 40 fast break points allowed by FSU (26 in the second half).
Shaw had five players score double figures. Senior guard Passion Phillips was the leading scorer for the Lady Broncos with 17 points and three steals. Sophomore guard L' Oreal Price added 11 points, five rebounds, and 3 assists. Freshman center Tiffany Haywood nearly closed in on a double-double with 11 points and eight rebounds.
The win improves the Lady Bears to 16-11 overall and 13-3 in the conference. The Lady Broncos slip to 14-10 for the season and 10-5 in the CIAA.
FSU gears back up for CIAA women's basketball action on Saturday, February 16th in a rematch against Saint Augustine's College. The Lady Broncos have dropped their last two match-ups, including a loss to the Lady Falcons. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 pm in Capel Arena to accommodate the men's nationally televised game.
