LARRY MCDONALD NAMED TO ALL-CIAA ROOKIE FOOTBALL TEAM

Nov. 6, 2008

Hampton, VA - Freshman offensive guard Larry McDonald is the only Bronco named to the 2008 CIAA Football All-Rookie Offensive and Defensive teams as voted by the CIAA Sports Information Directors' Association. Virginia State running back Taron Hampton was named Offensive Rookie of the Year; while Livingstone linebacker Robert Massey-Brice earned Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.

McDonald, a 6'2, 260 lbs native of Mebane, NC, was the only freshman starter on an offensive line that contributed to the Broncos producing the most offensive touchdowns in the conference (54). Fayetteville State has the second ranked scoring offense in the CIAA with 370 points, second in the conference in total offense (averaging 372.9 yards a game), and second in rushing touchdowns with 21.

The Trojans' Taron Hampton has recorded one of the more memorable rookie seasons with his performance this season. Hampton was the only running back to rush for over 1,000 yards this year. He leads the CIAA in rushing with 1,120 yards which set a single season rushing record at Virginia State. He also ranks 8th in the CIAA in total offense and is 12th in NCAA Division II in rushing.

Robert Massey-Brice was equally impressive on the defensive side of the ball at the linebacker position for the Livingstone Blue Bears. He leads the conference in forced fumbles and is tied at first in fumble recoveries. The Charlotte, NC native is tied for third in the CIAA in tackles, which tops all freshmen defenders in 2008. Against Shaw University on October 25th he registered 18 tackles, forced a fumble and had an interception for which he was named CIAA Linebacker of the Week.
