LAST SECOND SHOT GIVES BOWIE THE WIN OVER FSU

Fayetteville, NC - The Lady Broncos were dealt a tough 74-71 conference loss to Bowie State University Saturday evening inside Capel Arena. FSU falls to 1-2 in the overall standings and 0-2 in the CIAA.

With the exception of making the first basket to start the contest, Fayetteville State trailed throughout the first half. Bowie pushed their advantage to 11 with 3:42 remaining before the half. FSU continued to compete led by the charge of sophomore center Tiffany Haywood. Haywood produced seven points, 10 rebounds, and three steals in the first and by halftime the Lady Broncos were within reach, down 35-29.

The Lady Bulldogs shot 43.3% (13-of-30) from the field in the first period; including 2-of-4 shooting from the behind three point line. FSU struggled from the field, shooting just 27.8% (10-of-36) overall and 0-of-5 from beyond the arc. However, the Lady Broncos did out-rebounded Bowie 27-15 and outscored them 8-0 in the second chance points' category.

Fayetteville State went on an 8-0 run at the 14:23 mark to tie the game at 47. Their were several ties and lead changes over the next few minutes as the two teams exchanged baskets and free throws.

With 24 seconds remaining, the game tied for the 13th time. Sophomore guard Amanda Owens sunk her second free throw to knot it up at 71. Denisha Kenion missed a lay-up on the other end for BSU. The Lady Bulldogs got the rebound and kicked it out to guard Bianca Lee. Lee drilled a 3-ptr from right wing to put Bowie up 74-71. The Lady Broncos had just enough time to inbound the ball as the horn sounded.

Bowie improves to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the CIAA. Teaunsha Robinson paced the Lady Bulldogs with a game-high 22 points and seven boards before fouling out. Lee dropped in 16 points and seven rebounds, while Juliette Turner had 13 points and six rebounds for BSU.

Haywood finished with a double-double of 18 points and 16 rebounds (10 offensive). Junior guard Chelsea Jeter contributed with 13 points and eight boards for the Lady Broncos. Despite the loss, FSU was ahead in each of the specialty categories (points in the paint, points off turnovers, second chance points, and points from the bench).

The Lady Broncos will face another conference opponent in Virginia Union University on Tuesday, November 25th. The contest is scheduled to begin at 5:30 pm from the Capel Arena.
