Fayetteville, NC - The Broncos exploded on Johnson C. Smith University en route to a 48-3 homecoming victory Saturday afternoon inside Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium. Fayetteville State, currently ranked 8th in the Super Regional One Poll, improves to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the CIAA.

It only took sophomore running back Richard Medlin 13 seconds to return the opening kickoff 83 yards and put FSU out in front. Medlin returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown in the last home game against Chowan. The Broncos blew out the Hawks, and the results were similar for the Golden Bulls.

The Broncos had six different offensive players score touchdowns and they never trailed in the contest. Fayetteville State produced 445 total yards on offense; the defense held JCSU to just three points, 219 total yards, and forced four turnovers (2 interceptions, 2 fumbles recovered).

Medlin finished the day with 244 all-purpose yards, including a season-high 134 rushing yards and a touchdown run. FSU opened up the aerial attack, which resulted in five passing touchdowns. Senior quarterback Bryan Hardy threw for 163 yards on 11-of-23 attempts and three TDs.

By halftime, FSU was up 35-3 and Johnson C. Smith showed no signs of coming back. Sophomore quarterback Benjamin Williams stepped in to get some reps with the offense. Williams found freshman receiver Hakeem Potts in the third quarter for the biggest offensive score of the game (in terms of yardage). Williams connected with Potts, who made a few shifty moves on his way to a 41-yard touchdown reception.

Williams only threw seven passes, completing four for 72 yards, and two touchdowns. The Broncos' defense sacked the quarterback four times. Junior defensive end Eric Conway was responsible for two sacks, along with six tackles (2 solo, 4 assists), and three tackles for a loss. Pressure on JCSU's quarterbacks and good coverage in the secondary helped put junior free safety Jeff Gowdy in position for two interceptions.

Fayetteville State has yet to lose a home game against Johnson C. Smith with Kenny Phillips as the head coach (now 4-0). JCSU linebacker Michael Morgan was one of the bright spots in an otherwise dismal day for the Golden Bulls. Morgan had a game-high 11 tackles (6 solo, 5 assists), three sacks, and four tackles for a loss.

The Broncos have two games remaining and hopes of advancing to the CIAA Championship game. FSU will travel to Raleigh, NC to square off against St. Augustine's College on Saturday, October 25th. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 pm from Broughton High School Stadium.
